Free Hash Generator — MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512

Compute multiple hash digests of any text at once, instantly and entirely in your browser.

How to generate a hash

  1. 1

    Enter your text

Type or paste the text you want to hash into the input box.

  2. 2

    Read the digests

MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes all update automatically as you type.

  3. 3

    Copy the one you need

Click "Copy" next to any hash to grab that specific digest.

Example use cases

1

Matching an unknown checksum format

Compare your input against a published checksum without knowing in advance which algorithm was used.

2

Choosing between legacy and modern algorithms

See MD5/SHA-1 alongside SHA-256/SHA-512 when working with older systems that still expect a weaker digest.

3

Quick data fingerprinting

Generate a fast, reproducible fingerprint of a string for logging, deduplication, or cache keys.

Frequently asked questions

Which hash algorithm should I use?

For anything security-sensitive (passwords, signatures, integrity against tampering), use SHA-256 or SHA-512. MD5 and SHA-1 are considered cryptographically broken and are only suitable for quick checksums or duplicate detection, not security.

Why generate all these hashes at once?

It's convenient when you need to compare a value against a checksum published in an unknown format, or when a spec asks for a specific algorithm you're not sure of ahead of time.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. Every hash is computed locally in your browser using JavaScript and the Web Crypto API — nothing you type is sent to a server.

Can I hash a file instead of text?

This page hashes text. For files, use the dedicated MD5 Generator or SHA-256 Generator tools, which both support file uploads processed locally.
