Frequently asked questions
What makes a good URL slug?
Short, lowercase, hyphen-separated, and made up of the words that actually matter for the page's topic — free of stop words, special characters, and redundant dates or IDs where possible.
How long should a slug be?
There's no hard limit, but shorter slugs (roughly under 60 characters) tend to display fully in search results and are easier to read and share. Very long slugs get truncated and add little SEO value beyond the first few relevant words.
Should I remove stop words like "a", "the", "of"?
It's a common convention to trim them for brevity, but it's optional — they don't hurt rankings directly. This checker flags them only when the stop-word option is turned on.
Hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens — search engines treat a hyphen as a word separator but generally don't split words joined by an underscore, which can make underscore-separated slugs read as one long word.
Is my URL sent to a server?
No — the slug is analyzed entirely in your browser.
