Free Online XML Validator

Paste XML below to check that it's well-formed. Runs entirely in your browser.

How to validate XML online

  1. 1

    Paste your XML

Copy in the XML document you want to check, from a config file, feed, or API response.

  2. 2

    Click "Validate"

The tool parses it using the browser's built-in XML parser.

  3. 3

    Read the result

A green checkmark means the XML is well-formed. An error message points to what went wrong, like a mismatched or unclosed tag.

  4. 4

    Fix and re-check

Correct the flagged issue and validate again until you get a clean pass.

Example use cases

1

Checking a hand-edited config

Verify a manually edited XML config or feed file is well-formed before deploying it.

2

Debugging a broken feed

Find the mismatched or unclosed tag causing an RSS, Atom, or sitemap feed to fail elsewhere.

3

Reviewing an API response

Confirm an XML or SOAP response is well-formed before writing a parser against it.

Frequently asked questions

What does an XML validator check?

It checks that your document is well-formed — every tag is properly closed and nested, attribute values are quoted, and there's exactly one root element — and reports where parsing failed if it isn't.

Is this the same as validating against a schema or DTD?

No. This checks well-formedness only (correct XML syntax). It doesn't check your document against an XSD or DTD schema, so structurally valid XML that doesn't match your schema's rules will still pass here.

Is my XML uploaded anywhere?

No. Validation runs entirely in your browser using the DOM parser built into JavaScript — nothing is sent to a server.

What's the difference between this and the XML Formatter?

This tool focuses purely on catching well-formedness errors. The XML Formatter also parses and re-indents or minifies valid XML.
