The old advice — "keep it under 160 characters" — is a useful rule of thumb, but it's not exactly how Google decides where to cut a meta description off.

Google truncates by pixel width, not character count

Search result snippets are cut off based on how much horizontal space the text takes up on the results page, not a fixed character limit. Wide characters like W or M take up more pixel width than narrow ones like i or l — so two descriptions of the same character length can get truncated at different points. This is why a "160-character" description sometimes still gets cut short.

A practical target

Aiming for roughly 120–155 characters keeps almost any description safely within the visible snippet on both desktop and mobile, without relying on an exact character count.

What actually earns the click

Length aside, the description's job is to make someone choose your result over the others on the page. That generally means:

  • Leading with the specific benefit or answer, not a generic intro
  • Including the primary keyword naturally, since Google often bolds matching terms in the snippet
  • A clear, distinct description per page — duplicate descriptions across pages waste the opportunity entirely

It's a suggestion, not a guarantee

Google sometimes rewrites the snippet shown in search results if it judges another passage on the page answers the query better. Writing a strong, accurate description improves the odds it gets used as written, but it isn't a hard guarantee.

Our Meta Description Generator keeps you inside a safe length as you write, and the Meta Title Checker does the same pixel-width check for your title tag.
