Free Image Alt Text Generator & Checker
Upload an image (or just type a filename) and a bit of context to get draft alt-text suggestions, or paste existing alt text to check it against accessibility and SEO best practices. Nothing is uploaded to a server — everything runs in your browser. Need to inspect an image's other properties? See the Image Metadata Viewer.

How to write good alt text
-
1
Add an image or filename
Upload the file (read locally only) or just describe it — either works.
-
2
Describe the subject and context
A short phrase on what the image shows and why it's on the page is enough.
-
3
Pick a suggestion and refine it
Edit the generated draft so it accurately and concisely describes the image.
-
4
Check it against best practices
Paste the final text into the checker to catch length, redundant phrases, or keyword-stuffing issues.
Example use cases
Publishing new content
Draft a starting point for every image on a new blog post or product page.
An accessibility audit
Check existing alt text across a site against best practices before a review.
Marking decorative images
Confirm which images should get an empty alt="" instead of a description.
Frequently asked questions
What makes good alt text?
Short, specific, and descriptive of what matters about the image in context — usually well under 125 characters, without redundant phrases like "image of" (screen readers already announce it as an image), and without keyword stuffing.
Should every image have alt text?
Every informative image should. Purely decorative images (background textures, spacers) should instead use an empty alt="" so screen readers skip over them rather than reading a meaningless description.
Does alt text affect SEO?
Indirectly. Alt text isn't a major ranking factor, but it helps image search understand and rank the image, and it's one of the accessibility signals that contributes to overall page quality.
Is this tool using AI to look at my image?
No — nothing is uploaded or analyzed by AI. The generator only reads the filename and pixel dimensions locally in your browser and combines them with what you type to draft a starting point; you should always review and edit the suggestion.
