Free Meta Description Pixel Checker

Like titles, Google truncates meta descriptions based on rendered pixel width, not a fixed character count. This tool measures the actual pixel width in the font used in search results, so you can see how close a description really is to the cutoff. To draft a new description from scratch, try the Meta Description Generator.

How it will likely appear in Google

How to check a meta description's pixel width

  1. 1

    Paste your description

Enter the meta description as it's written on the page (or as you're drafting it).

  2. 2

    Pick desktop or mobile

Mobile has a narrower pixel budget, so check both if the page gets meaningful mobile traffic.

  3. 3

    Watch the pixel bar

It fills toward the limit live and turns red once the description is likely to be cut off.

  4. 4

    Trim until it fits

Shorten the wording, front-loading the most important part, until the bar stays under the limit.

Example use cases

1

Publishing a new page

Confirm the description won't be cut off mid-sentence before it goes live.

2

Auditing existing pages

Find descriptions that look fine by character count but actually overflow the real pixel budget.

3

Comparing description variants

Check the rendered width of a few different wordings before picking one.

Frequently asked questions

Why measure pixels instead of characters?

Google wraps and truncates the description over roughly two lines of a proportional font, so the actual cutoff point depends on which letters are used, not a fixed character count. A description full of narrow letters can run longer than "160 characters" and still display in full.

What pixel limits does this use?

Roughly 920px combined across two lines on desktop and 680px on mobile, measured in a common SERP-style font. These are close approximations, since Google doesn't publish an exact figure and its snippet layout changes periodically.

Will Google always show this exact description?

Not always. Google sometimes generates its own snippet from page content if it believes that better matches the search query — this tool only checks how the description you've written would be measured if it is used as-is.

Is this the same as the Meta Description Generator?

They're complementary. The Meta Description Generator helps draft a description from a keyword and benefit; this tool checks the real rendered pixel width of a description you already have.
