How to add a Twitter Card to a page
-
1
Choose a card type
Summary with large image is the standard choice for articles, blog posts, and product pages.
-
2
Fill in title, description & URL
Keep the title under ~70 characters so it isn't truncated in the card.
-
3
Add an image and handles
The image URL drives the preview; the site/creator @handles are optional attribution.
-
4
Copy the tags into your page
Paste the generated tags into the <head> of the page they describe, then verify with X's Card Validator.
Example use cases
Blog posts & articles
Make sure links shared on X show a proper headline image instead of a bare URL.
Product & landing pages
Control exactly what image and copy appear when a product page is shared or linked in a tweet.
Fixing a broken card preview
Diagnose and correct missing or wrong twitter:image or twitter:card tags on an existing page.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Twitter Card?
Meta tags (prefixed twitter:) that control how a link looks when shared on X — the card layout, image, title, and description shown instead of a bare link.
Summary vs summary_large_image — which should I use?
summary_large_image shows a wide banner image and is the better choice for most blog posts, articles, and product pages. summary shows a small square thumbnail alongside the text, better suited to profile-style content.
Do I still need Open Graph tags?
Yes — X falls back to og:title, og:description, and og:image for any twitter: tag you leave out, so most sites use both together rather than Twitter Card tags alone.
What image size works best?
Roughly 1200×630px (1.91:1) for summary_large_image, or a minimum 144×144px square for summary — larger images are automatically scaled down.
My card isn't updating after I changed the tags — why?
X caches a link's card the first time it's shared. Use the Card Validator at cards-dev.twitter.com/validator to force a re-scrape.
