Example use cases

1

New site launch

2

Sites with weak internal linking

Help crawlers find pages that aren't reachable through normal site navigation.

3

Static sites without a CMS sitemap plugin

Generate a sitemap manually for a hand-built or static site that has no built-in sitemap feature.

Frequently asked questions

What is an XML sitemap?

A file listing every important URL on your site so search engines can discover and crawl your pages more efficiently, especially ones that aren't well linked internally.

Do I need valid URLs to start with each http:// or https://?

Yes — each entry must be a full, absolute URL (e.g. https://example.com/page), not a relative path like /page.

What do priority and changefreq actually do?

They're hints, not commands — priority suggests a page's relative importance on your own site, and changefreq suggests how often it changes. Google has said it largely ignores both, though some other search engines and crawlers still use them.

Where do I upload the sitemap?

Upload sitemap.xml to your site's root (so it's reachable at https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml), then submit that URL in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and optionally reference it from your robots.txt.

Is there a limit to how many URLs a sitemap can hold?

The sitemap protocol caps a single file at 50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed — larger sites split URLs across multiple sitemap files listed in a sitemap index.
