Frequently asked questions

How is CAGR calculated?

CAGR = (Ending value ÷ Beginning value)^(1/years) − 1, expressed as a percentage. It's the constant annual rate that would take the beginning value to the ending value over the stated period.

How is CAGR different from average annual return?

A simple average of yearly percentage changes can be skewed by volatile years. CAGR smooths the whole period into a single steady rate, which is why it's the standard way to compare growth across investments or time periods.

Can CAGR be negative?

Yes - if the ending value is lower than the beginning value, CAGR comes out negative, showing the rate at which the value shrank each year.
