Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

Words are counted as chunks of text separated by whitespace (spaces, tabs, or line breaks). Punctuation attached to a word doesn't split it.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, a common average adult silent-reading speed. Speaking time is estimated at 130 words per minute.

How are sentences and paragraphs counted?

Sentences are counted by splitting on ., !, and ? followed by a space or the end of the text. Paragraphs are counted as blocks of text separated by a blank line.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. Every count updates entirely in your browser as you type — nothing is transmitted or logged.
